Springtime Allergies and Itchy Pets
It is a very frustrating and somewhat common problem. Over 20 million dogs and cat suffer from allergies, causing pets to feel itchy. Scratching can generate more itchiness thereby causing more scratching. The constant assault on the skin by the pet’s claws can actually damage the skin, leading to hair loss and oozing sores known as “hot spots”.

Allergies to airborne substances, such as pollen and mold spores, are one reason for itchiness in pets. This is known as atopy and is seen in pets from springtime through fall. This condition can be inherited in certain breeds.

If your pet has signs of allergies year round, the cause may be food allergies. Contrary to popular belief, food allergies take time to develop and are not due to recent diet changes. Most pets with food allergies have been eating the offending food with little problem for years. Common food allergies can include any major protein source in the pet’s food.

In some mild cases, the itchiness can be treated with anti-histamines or steroids for a short period of time. However, be aware that allergies are not a condition that can be cured. The good news is that they can be well managed by the pet owner and veterinary team. Utilizing diagnostic tests such as blood testing or skin allergy tests, our veterinarians can often find ways to reduce the itchiness.

Working with us to identify what is causing your pet’s symptoms will help keep your four-legged friends’ feet right where they belong.. on the ground!
"Just What IS That Doggie in the Window?"
Science is allowing us to take a new and exciting look at our pets. DNA testing for dogs is enabling many owners of mixed breed dogs to discover more about their mutts. The test has an 84% accuracy rate. Using technology that may be familiar to CSI viewers, a small amount of blood is taken from our pet and compared to a DNA database to determine your pet's ancestors. Contact our hospital or clinic if you would like to know just what is that doggie in your window!
